In 1944, Anna Dengel became aware of the need of health care for poor black people in Georgia that was being met by the Catholic Colored Clinic in Atlanta. She decided to send sisters to Georgia to take charge of the clinic. The gradual expansion of services and growth in demand from the community lead to the development, construction, and (in 1964) opening of the Holy Family Hospital Atlanta. In the 60s Holy Family Hospital Atlanta began shifting towards lay leadership and MMS left in 1972.
